The Barn

A Place To Call Home Series

Featured in Grand Old Shed/Barns
(2009.DEC.29)

The barn is the the largest, and most substantial of the stone structures on this homestead. Thick stone walls support the heavy, hand-hewn rafters. These beams would have come from the north, in Oregon’s timber country, and been hauled down by horse and wagon.

I was impressed by the craftsmanship that went into this building; the squareness of the corners and walls, the symmetry of the windows, and perhaps most remarkably; the levelness of the floor and foundation. Items that our early pioneers often overlooked, when beginning construction of their home sites.

I’m not sure which side of the Oregon/Nevada state line this is on. My “guide” did not remember – or would not divulge – the name of this homestead, or the man who built it. I can respect that.
