The old man waved an arm across the golden field of blooming rabbit brush upon the old ore dump. He shook his head and chuckled, “And _+they+ say that mining ruins the land …!”

I felt moved by sympathy for a man unable to comprehend the changes he has witnessed here, and a bit of sadness in knowing that this brilliant brush may be the last gold ever produced by the Exchequer Mine.
