Circle Of Life

Last fall, I was delighted to discover that this small band of wild horses had added two new foals, the preceding spring.

Born Free - (the “pony portrait” below) - was one of those babies. Just look at him now! (I’m guessing stallion.)

One foal has been added to the herd. One mare (Born Free’s mother) was nowhere to be seen. The mare behind is likely a sibling; this year’s foal, a cousin/half sister or brother.

If our little paint is a stallion, he will be allowed to stay with the band until he becomes a threat to the leader stud. Then he will be driven away to find a harem of his own.

I consider it a tremendous privilege to be allowed to observe these wild horses, year after year. If the BLM carries through with their proposed plan to remove these mustangs from their traditional range, a great piece of western heritage is doomed to be lost.
