Young Buck

Young mule deer sprouting his first set of antlers. His brand new horns haven’t yet broken throught the skin.

I can’t help wondering if this phase of deer development is painful, like cutting teeth only much larger, and on top of the head? Ow!

It is very unusual to get this close to a wild mulie. This young fellow and a couple of his compatriots were busy munching grass in the hayfield, and they didn’t notice me approaching from behind a herd of horses, until I was within a few hundred yards of them.
